…The school doors loomed, a gaping maw ready to swallow him whole. He took a deep, steadying breath, the scent of stale gymnasium air and cheap disinfectant filling his lungs. He imagined himself as a ghost, a shadow drifting through the halls, invisible, untouchable. He wouldn’t make eye contact. He wouldn’t offer a smile. He would simply exist, a temporary fixture until he could find a way to truly move on. The first bell was a distant, muffled clang, a signal that the performance was about to begin. Noah braced himself, forcing his feet forward, a stranger in a strange land, carrying a heart that was still very much in pieces.
