You must protect it until the next new moon, or all will be lost.” Greg looked at his friends. “We have to get this flower to the surface. We have to keep it safe.” Mortimer pointed a claw at a narrow tunnel leading upward. “That path feels like it goes to the Whispering Woods. If we hurry, we might make it before the shadow finds us again.” Greg picked up the potted flower carefully. “Then let’s go. Together.” They entered the tunnel, the flower’s grey light casting long shadows behind them. And from far above, they heard the serpent’s laughter, echoing through the earth.
