…They sat in silence, the night wrapping around them like a blanket. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked, and a car passed on the street. But here, on this porch, time seemed to slow. Dale thought about the letter in his pocket, the box of watch parts, the lingering shadow of a threat. But he pushed it aside, focusing on the warmth of Skye beside him, the sound of her breathing, the beat of her heart. Tomorrow, they would deal with it. Tomorrow, they would make plans. But tonight, they would rest. They would hold each other. And they would remember what they were fighting for.
