…The grumpiness hadn’t vanished entirely, not yet. It was like a stubborn stain that would probably linger for a while. But it was no longer the defining characteristic. It was a footnote, not the main text. He was, for the first time in a very long time, looking forward. Not with dread, not with trepidation, but with a quiet, hopeful curiosity. The future, once a dark and foreboding landscape, now seemed like an open road, inviting him to explore. And as he stood there, bathed in the fading light, Stuart, the once perpetually grumpy old man, let out another soft, knowing chuckle. The grumpy had, indeed, found a sliver of glad. It was a start. And for Stuart, that was more than enough.
