…But the echo of Mr. Abernathy’s voice, the weight of his glare, still lingered. It was no longer a source of terror, but a puzzle. A puzzle that Stuart was determined to solve, one memory at a time. He picked up his old school photograph, the one with the slightly too-short haircut, and stared at the earnest, anxious face looking back at him. Mr. Abernathy’s glare might have shaped him, but it wouldn't define him. Not anymore. He still had more questions than answers, but for the first time in a long time, Stuart felt a flicker of something akin to hope. The past, it seemed, was finally starting to make a little more sense.
