…The grumpy facade he’d worn for so long felt a little less secure. It was as if a hairline crack had appeared, and through it, he could glimpse a landscape he’d never known existed. He walked back into the kitchen, the smell of burnt toast now a faint, almost nostalgic, aroma. He looked at the bin, then at the dresser. A decision, small but significant, began to form. He needed to find out who Robert was. He needed to understand what had really happened that day. And for the first time in a long time, Stuart felt a flicker of something akin to excitement. It was a dangerous feeling, he knew. But then again, so was spilled milk. And so, it seemed, was the past.
