…The engine’s sudden surge was a violent disruption of the eerie silence that had fallen. He spun the wheel, the boat lurching, cutting a desperate swathe across the waves. He risked a glance back. The shark, its massive form briefly illuminated by the spray, was still there, a dark, implacable shadow, but it was no longer directly behind him. It was circling, its focus momentarily diverted, its fury a palpable presence in the vast, indifferent ocean. Elias pushed the engine harder, the Sea Serpent leaping from wave to wave, a fragile vessel fleeing a primal terror. He was alive, for now. The truce was temporary, the ocean’s fury far from spent.
