My Story

Previously

…I looked around for a weapon. My eyes landed on a broken chair leg near the fireplace. I picked it up, feeling its weight. Then I moved toward the staircase, listening. The steps had stopped. The silence was absolute. I climbed the stairs one at a time, pressing my weight against the wall to minimize the noise. At the top, a narrow hallway stretched ahead, with three doors. All of them were closed. I could see a thin line of light under the middle door. I took a breath and gripped the chair leg tighter. Then I walked toward the light.
