…Agnes looked at her handkerchief, then at Penelope’s vibrant, improbable hat. For the first time since she’d entered the room, the urge to meticulously smooth her skirt, to adjust her spectacles, to impose order on the perceived chaos, receded. The handkerchief remained in her hand, a silent witness to a moment where the meticulously planned, and the delightfully unhinged, had found a strange, fleeting harmony. The river of chaos, it seemed, was beginning to flow, and Agnes, for the first time, wasn’t entirely sure she wanted to build a bridge over it.
