…Mary managed a hesitant wave, her heart still thumping a nervous rhythm against her ribs. Leo, oblivious to Mary's internal turmoil, jogged over, the kite bobbing behind him. "Nice to meet you, Mary," he said, his voice warm and easy. "We were just about to fly this kite. Want to join us?" The offer hung in the air, a tempting invitation. Mary looked at Luna, whose eyes sparkled with anticipation, and then at Leo, whose friendly gaze offered no judgment. Taking a deep breath, she felt a sliver of her usual adventurous spirit begin to push through the shyness. Maybe, just maybe, this new friendship would be as easy and bright as flying a kite.
