…If I could find them, maybe they would help me. Maybe they would listen. I pulled myself upright, ignoring the ache in my ribs. I didn’t know where to start. But I knew one thing: I would find Ikari. I would find him, and I would make Iris pay for what she had done. The wind stirred around me, faint but present. It carried a whisper, a promise. I wasn’t alone. Not entirely. Somewhere in this strange new world, a fire burned, waiting to be reunited with the breeze.

Rain slicked the city in a dull sheen, each droplet adding a shimmer to the cracked sidewalks and the neon reflections trailing down the gutters. Ochita Raito pressed herself into the shadow of a deserted doorway, heart hammering beneath her thin, wind-spun cloak. Her fingers trembled as she pressed them to her ribs—bruised, but nothing broken. Magic pulsed faintly in her veins, a memory of home reduced to little more than a tingle in her fingertips. She could sense currents of aether, but they were thin and uncertain here—flickering between the glass and iron, running underfoot like a stream half-choked with silt.

She was so cold, and so very alone.

A city bus hissed past, spattering her with dirty water. She flinched and ducked lower, cradling her knees. People shuffled by in hooded jackets and headphones, eyes flat and unseeing. A child pointed at her cloak, but her mother tugged him away, muttering about costumed weirdos and dangerous nights. Ochita bit her tongue to keep herself from crying out again for Ikari. The fire-apprentice wouldn’t just give up. Kazan-sei Ikari was stubborn—trouble, Iris had called her, but Ochita had seen the goodness behind that sharp tongue and blazing eyes. Somewhere in this endless city, Ikari was out there, fighting too.

A streetlamp flickered above her. She looked up, searching desperately for a sign—any sign—from the wind, from the guardians, from anything beyond this world that might still care. But the only answer was the low hum of overhead powerlines and the endless sigh of rain.

At last, hunger and cold forced her to move. Ochita pushed herself upright, wrapping her cloak tighter. She walked, careful to keep to the shadows, searching for shelter. The buildings here were stone and glass, full of tiny windows and dirty light. The magic in the air—such as it was—buzzed with interference, colors and signals she barely understood. But ahead, a jagged archway glowed with an icy blue light.

She crept closer, drawn by instinct: the sensation wasn’t like the wind’s aether. No, it was synthetic—artificial, but structured. Carefully woven. She recognized the signature of the twin guardians, JEST3R and ERR0R. Iris had never let her meet them, but every student in the aether had heard the stories: they lived in the High Tech City, ruling over machines and code, older than many mortals realized.

A metal door slid open ahead, spilling music and laughter into the wet street. Ochita’s heart jumped. A pair of figures stood in the doorway, framed by electric light. The taller one’s eyes glimmered with fractured, unnatural colors—ERR0R, with a smile sharp as code. The shorter figure, JEST3R, had a painted grin and a shock of hair that glowed blue in the neon. They glanced at each other, then at Ochita.

“She’s lost,” JEST3R said, voice buzzing and doubled, like two radios tuning in at once.

ERR0R tilted their head. “She’s more than lost… She’s wind-touched. Aether-born.”

Ochita tensed, every muscle in her body ready to run or fight. “Please,” she managed, “I need your help. I’m looking for someone. I— I don’t belong here.”

JEST3R grinned wider, stepping forward. “Don’t we all not belong, little breeze? Come inside. The city’s not kind to those with old-world magic.”

ERR0R extended a hand, palm up. “We can shield you. But shelter has a price. And you have something Iris never wanted us to see.”

The wind stirred in Ochita’s ears—a warning, or an invitation—and behind the guardians, strange shapes moved in the shadows. The electric air hummed with anticipation, charged with the possibility of sanctuary… or danger.

Ochita hesitated on the threshold, rain running down her face, heart pounding, as the door yawned wider and the city seemed to hold its breath.
