…“Go now, my dear,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “And remember, you are loved.” With a final, lingering glance at the imposing silhouette of the Pendleton townhouse, Laura stepped into the carriage. The horses stirred, and with a gentle lurch, they began to move, carrying her away from the shadows of her past, towards an unknown future, a future she would forge for herself, with a strength she was only beginning to discover. The fog, as it had always done, swirled around the departing carriage, a silent witness to another soul seeking its own path, away from the suffocating embrace of a life that threatened to consume it.
