…But what lay beyond was not the sanctuary they had desperately hoped for. The room was plunged into an unnatural darkness, a darkness that seemed to absorb the faint light from the study. A faint, cloying scent, like damp earth and forgotten things, wafted out. And from the depths of the blackness, a low, rasping breath could be heard, a sound that promised nothing but a chilling emptiness. The knocking had stopped, but whatever had been knocking was now inside. And it was waiting.
