…As the first hint of dawn painted the sky, they stood back, surveying their work. It was still a mess, but now, it was a mess with a plan. A mess that was beginning to whisper promises of laughter and excitement. Kayson looked at his two new allies, the stern librarian and the grumpy strongman, their faces illuminated by the nascent light. He had a team. An odd squad, to be sure, but a team nonetheless. And for the first time since he’d inherited this chaotic legacy, Kayson felt a flicker of genuine hope. The carnival was still a disaster zone, but perhaps, just perhaps, they could make it a magical one.
