…Jacob stood, his legs no longer shaking. He looked at the compass, then at the light, and a strange calm settled over him. He had walked a thousand miles through a fabricated world, a world designed to test him, to break him. He had faced swamps and deserts, badlands and jungles, and the cold certainty of his own lost memories. But the journey was not over. It had only changed. He checked the compass one more time, then began to walk toward the light, his boots crunching through the ash of a dead world. The wind howled around him, and the toxic sky pressed down, but he did not stop. Somewhere out there, someone—or something—had survived. And Jacob intended to find them.
