…"Who are you?" I called. The figure didn't answer. It just pointed at me, then at the ground, as if telling me to stay. Then it vanished. One moment there, the next gone. "What was that?" Eron asked. "I don't know," I said. "But I don't think it was a friend." We moved faster after that. The pass opened into a valley, and in the distance, we saw the village. It was small, nestled against a lake. Smoke rose from chimneys. People moved in the streets. Normal. Peaceful. For now. We walked toward it, the light inside me humming. Red and green. Ready for whatever came next.
