…The next morning, a messenger arrived. A young girl with bright eyes and a nervous smile. "Are you Kael?" she asked. "Depends. Who's asking?" "My village sent me. We heard what you did. They want to thank you." I looked past her, toward the horizon. A column of smoke rose in the distance. Not a fire—a signal. "Your village is in trouble," I said. Her smile faded. "How did you know?" "I've seen that smoke before." I turned to find Eron. He was already walking toward me, his good hand resting on his sword. "Trouble?" he asked. "Probably." "Good. I was getting bored." The light inside me flickered. Not with fear. With purpose. "Let's go see what we're dealing with."
