Sarah could feel the blood pounding in her ears. The silence stretched, taut and unbearable. She closed her eyes, bracing herself for whatever was to come. Then, Dr. Rains spoke again, her voice laced with a quiet empathy. "The test results are back, Sarah. And they are..." The world tilted. The dancing dust motes seemed to freeze in the air. The music faded into a distant hum. Sarah’s breath hitched. The words hung suspended, a fragile, terrifying moment before they would inevitably fall.
