…As Thabo walked home that night, the weight of the ledger book he was allowed to take with him, a precious loan, felt like a beacon. The usual shadows on the street seemed less menacing, the distant shouts and laughter less of a threat and more of a reminder of the world he was slowly, surely, moving away from. He looked up at the vast Soweto sky, a sky he had always seen as a ceiling to his struggles, and for the first time, he saw it as a canvas, vast and full of possibility. The scent of dried herbs, polished wood, and sweet biscuits lingered on his clothes, a quiet promise of a future being built, one honest hour at a time.
