He walked out of the study, his footsteps unnaturally loud in the stillness, and found Eleanor standing at the top of the stairs, her face pale, her eyes wide. “Did you hear that?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. Arthur shook his head, a strange, shared understanding passing between them. “Hear what?” he asked, though he knew, with a chilling certainty, that they were both no longer hearing the house settling. They were hearing its whispers. And the whispers were growing louder. The door had closed, and the endless night was beginning to creep in.
