He also knew, with a certainty that chilled him to the bone, that he could not let his family be torn apart by this darkness. A sacrifice, he realized, might be the only way. A sacrifice that would not be a surrender, but an act of defiance. He looked at his family, their faces a mixture of fear and dawning hope, and a profound sadness washed over him. He loved them so much. And because he loved them, he knew what he had to do. He took a step back, away from his family, towards the deepest, most suffocating shadows.
