And he still had his friends. But as they walked toward the vehicles, he caught a glimpse of movement in the trees—a figure, standing still, watching. Then it was gone. He said nothing. Not yet. The chapter ends with Marcus catching a flicker of movement in the trees, a watcher still out there, and choosing to keep it to himself for now.
