…The footsteps moved toward the stove. A pause. Then a scraping sound—someone moving it. “There’s a trap door here.” Marcus’s heart hammered. He looked around the cellar wildly, searching for an exit. There was none. Just dirt walls, a shelf, the ladder. They were trapped. He heard the ring being pulled. The trap door lifted an inch. A sliver of light cut across the floor. Then, from outside, a shout. “State police! Drop your weapons!” A moment of frozen silence. Then cursing, the slam of boots, the crack of gunfire. The trap door fell shut again. Above them, the cabin erupted into chaos.
