…Marcus froze. His hand went to his pocket, but there was nothing there. Just the empty vial. Thorne stopped above him. “They found us.” The spotlight didn’t move. Marcus looked down. He could see figures below, silhouettes against the lights. At least five of them. Maybe more. “What do we do?” Maya whispered. Marcus didn’t have an answer. Then Derrick took a step down, his hands up. “I’ll go. Talk to them. Maybe I can buy you time.” “Derrick—” “I owe you this.” He didn’t look back. He kept walking down, step by step. The spotlight followed him. Marcus watched his childhood friend disappear into the light. And then a gunshot cracked through the night.
