…"Where?" Marcus asked. "The old fire tower. Five miles north. It's the only place with clean air." Marcus looked back at the factory. Lights flickered through the windows. Shadows moved inside. He thought of everyone in town. The friends he hadn't seen. The families still trapped. "We can't leave them," he said. "We can't save them if we're dead," Thorne replied. Maya squeezed Marcus's hand. "We'll come back. I promise." He wanted to argue. But the vial in his pocket was empty, and his body ached, and the night was closing in around them. "Fine," he said. "But we're coming back." They turned and headed north. Behind them, the screams grew louder.
