…“No—” Maya started. “I’m the one he’ll want to see.” Marcus met her eyes. “Derrick told me once that the only way to win a fight is to control the other guy’s attention.” He didn’t wait for an answer. He stepped out from behind the trees and walked toward the motel, his hands empty, his heart loud in the silence. The neon buzzed. The gravel crunched. The light behind the curtain flickered, and he saw a shadow move. He kept walking. Behind him, Maya and Thorne melted into the dark, circling around the building. The motel door opened a crack. Marcus stopped, ten feet away. “Mom,” he said, his voice cracking. “I’m here.”
