He looked back at the faint glow of the farmhouse through the trees. “She’s okay,” Maya whispered. “We’ll get her.” “I know.” His voice was flat, but his eyes were wet. “Let’s move.” They walked into the dark, the phone heavy in his pocket, his mother’s face burned into his memory. The air smelled of pine and damp earth. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked. And in the quiet between footsteps, Marcus thought he could hear her voice—not from the video, but from years ago, reading him a story by firelight. Holding his hand. Telling him everything was going to be all right. He held on to that sound as they disappeared into the trees.
