…They crested the last rise, and Marcus saw it. A two-story colonial with a wraparound porch, a pickup truck in the driveway. Smoke curled from the chimney. And standing on the porch, watching them approach, was the suited man. "Good evening," Corbin said, his voice carrying clearly across the yard. "I thought you might try this route. I've had people on every farmhouse for three miles." He held up a phone. On the screen, a woman's face—Marcus's mother, sitting in what looked like a motel room, her eyes wide with fear. "Phase Two starts tonight. Your mother is attending the fairgrounds launch. And I've arranged a very special seat for her."
