…"There is no other way." Derrick's voice was tight. "We go through that checkpoint, or we don't make it at all." The red and blue lights appeared on the horizon, pulsing through the trees. Marcus made a decision. He pulled the car onto the shoulder and killed the engine. "What are you doing?" Derrick hissed. "Thinking." They sat in the dark, the engine ticking as it cooled. The lights grew closer. Marcus looked at Derrick. "Get in the back. Under the blanket. If they stop us, you're not here." "And you?" "I'm just a guy who got lost on his way home." Derrick climbed into the back, pulling a dusty blanket over himself. Marcus took a breath. The headlights swept across the sedan.
