…He ran past the battling heroes, past the dissolving shadows, his small legs pumping, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He ran, a solitary Two, into the heart of danger, accidentally, irrevocably, entangled with the fate of the Kingdom. The forest blurred around him, the sounds of battle fading behind him, replaced by the ragged sound of his own breathing and the thrumming of the wooden bird in his palm. He was no longer just a runaway. He was a scout. A harbinger. And for the first time since discovering his rank, he felt a tiny, almost imperceptible flicker of something other than shame.
