…Jack, for the first time since leaving home, felt a tiny spark of something other than shame. He was a Two, yes, but he had seen things, noticed things, that the others, with their higher ranks and their focus on grand strategies, had overlooked. His low rank, his perceived insignificance, had perhaps allowed him to observe the world from a different vantage point, a ground-level view that offered clarity amidst the chaos. He was still terrified, still unsure of his place, but a seed of possibility had been planted. He was a Two, but maybe, just maybe, being a Two wasn't entirely a curse.
