…The instability was relentless. New schools, new faces, new rules. I learned to shed friendships like old skin, knowing they would be ripped away soon enough. It was easier to be the loser, the outcast, than to risk the pain of connection only to have it severed. The echoes of my time with my father and stepmother, the coldness, the constant anxiety, mingled with the new uncertainty of foster care, forming a heavy cloak of despair. I was adrift, a small boat tossed on a tempestuous sea, with no shore in sight. Yet, even in the deepest darkness, a tiny ember of resilience glowed, a silent promise that somehow, someday, I would find my way.
