The grand operas of his youth might have faded into memory, but the symphony of his later life, played out in the warmth of his Parisian salon, was, in its own way, just as magnificent. The silence that had once followed his decision to cease composing had not been an emptiness, but a space, a canvas upon which he had painted a richer, more flavorful existence.
