The chase, Toons realized with a sudden surge of amusement, had led him not to a criminal mastermind, but to a tiny, jam-covered gourmand. The mystery was far from over, but the culprit was now in sight, and Toons, despite his initial confusion, felt a familiar warmth spread through him. It wasn't the warmth of a solved case, not yet. It was the warmth of a good story unfolding, a story with sticky footprints, a boastful badger, and a mouse who just really, really liked pretzels.
