…Cain looked down at his hands, at his skin, expecting to see some visible sign, some brand of his sin. But there was nothing. Only the familiar grime of the earth, and the tremor of his own fear. He was marked, yes, but invisibly, a secret carried within him, a promise of protection that felt more like a cage. He turned, a solitary figure against the vast, indifferent landscape, the curse of restlessness already settling upon his shoulders, the ghost of his brother’s blood forever staining his soul. The mystery of Abel’s death was solved, but the mystery of Cain’s fate had only just begun.
