…Berenike turned away, her heart a leaden weight in her chest. She had failed. Her pleas had fallen on deaf ears. The King, her husband, had condemned a good man to ruin, not out of malice, but out of a terrifying, unshakeable faith that was being expertly manipulated. She looked out at the dusty fields, the wilting crops, and felt a premonition of the true famine that was about to descend upon their kingdom, a famine of justice, of mercy, and of the King’s own heart. The shadow of heresy, once a whisper, had now been cast in stone, and its chilling darkness spread outwards from the King’s chambers, promising a long and brutal winter for them all.
