…She pushed the door open. The room beyond was large, tiled, with drains in the floor. In the center, a stone altar stood, covered in the same symbols. Above the altar, the air shimmered, like heat rising off pavement. A vertical crack in reality, dark and pulsing, hung in the air. The gate. And in front of it, a figure stood. Tall, thin, with skin like old paper. Its eyes were black, empty, and it smiled with too many teeth. “You brought the key,” it said, its voice like dry leaves scraping together. “I was beginning to think you wouldn’t come.”
