…The girl stood with them now, breathing hard. Her name, she said, was Elena. And she knew where the second gate was. "The hospital is three blocks east," she said. "But we can't just walk in. We need a plan." "We'll make one on the way," Samira said. She looked at the key in her hand, then at Elena's. Two keys. Two gates. And a voice that wouldn't stop whispering. They stepped out of the church into the gray, silent city. The wind had picked up, carrying the smell of rain. Somewhere in the distance, a bell tolled once, then stopped. "What was that?" Chloe asked. Nobody answered. But Samira's key pulsed, and she knew: the second gate was opening. And they were running out of time.
