…They climbed the stairs to the first floor, then out the front door. The sky was gray, heavy with clouds. The street was empty. The creatures were gone. Liam was sitting on the curb, his head in his hands. He looked up when he heard them. His eyes were red. “You’re alive,” he said. His voice cracked. Marcus, Elena, and Garcia were farther down the street. They turned and ran toward them. Samira didn’t say anything. She just held Amir close and watched the clouds. The world was still broken. The darkness was still coming. But they were together, and for now, that was enough.
