…“But the mark remains,” the figure said, its voice fading. “The girl who broke the covenant is still bound. The debt may be paid, but the covenant is not broken. The next gate will demand more.” The figure disappeared beneath the surface, and the lake went still. Samira stood on the shore, her hand still burning. The mark on her palm glowed bright, and she knew the figure’s words were true. This was not over. From the dark water, a new sound emerged: a low, rhythmic thumping, like a heartbeat from deep underground. The floor trembled, and a crack split the stone at Samira’s feet, revealing a warm, golden light below. The next gate had already opened.
