…The hum reached a crescendo. The black door at the bottom of the stairs began to swing open, inch by inch, revealing a darkness so absolute it seemed to devour the light. Chloe grabbed Samira’s arm. Her eyes were wide, terrified. She mouthed one word: Run. But Samira couldn’t move. The mark on her hand—gone—but she still felt the pull, deeper than skin. She looked at the open door, at the darkness beyond, and knew that running would only delay what was already coming. The voice spoke one last time: “Come down, Samira. Or everything you have saved will be lost.” The hum fell silent. The door stood open. The group stood frozen at the edge of the abyss.
