…The mark on Samira’s hand flared one last time. The gate slammed shut with a sound like thunder. The silence that followed was absolute. Samira collapsed, gasping. The key was gone. The pedestal was cracked. The creatures were gone. The chamber was empty. “It’s sealed,” Elena said, her voice hollow. “But at what cost?” Samira looked at her hand. The crescent mark was gone. She felt lighter, as if something had been taken. She looked at Chloe, who was standing still, her eyes blank. “Chloe?” Samira said. Chloe didn’t respond. She stared at the empty pedestal, her lips moving silently, but no sound came out. The gate had taken her voice.
