…I leaned against the empty desk, my legs feeling a little wobbly. I had a meeting. At Penny’s house. On Thursday. I was working on a project with Penny. It was all happening so fast, and yet, it felt like the slowest, most agonizingly wonderful week of my life was just beginning. The terror was still there, a cold knot in my stomach, but it was now mixed with an electric current of hope, a feeling so potent it made the hum of the classroom lights seem like a distant, forgotten sound. I had a partner. And that partner was Penny. The first bell had rung, and the first flutter of something much more significant than a crush was starting to take flight.
