…"They think we knew," she said quietly. "They think we caused it." Leandros sat beside her. "We did know. That is the truth." "But we did not cause it." "Does that matter? To them, we are foreigners who fled a Roman city with Roman wealth. They will want someone to blame." Issa looked at him. His face was tired, but his eyes were steady. "What do we do?" "We go to the court. We tell the truth. And we hope that the truth is enough." She nodded, though she did not believe him. The truth had never been enough before. Behind them, the fountain continued to flow, indifferent to their fear. And somewhere in the house, the scrolls from the hidden chamber waited, their secrets still unread.
