…"Do not watch," Leandros said, pulling Issa forward. "We go inland. We do not stop." They ran. The farmhouse appeared through the ash, a low stone building with a tiled roof. The door was open, swaying in the wind. They stumbled inside and collapsed against the walls, coughing, gasping. Marcus closed the door. The sound of the mountain was muffled, but it did not stop. The ground continued to shake. The roof creaked. Issa looked at Leandros. Her face was streaked with ash, her eyes red. She held the satchel to her chest like a child. "We made it," she said. "We are alive." He took her hand. "Yes. And we will stay alive." Outside, Vesuvius roared, and the world changed forever.
