…"Leaving," he repeated. "Yes." "And we will come back. One day, when the mountain is quiet again, we will come back and rebuild." He covered her hand with his own. "I believe you." They stood there for a long moment, the pulse of the mountain lighting the sky, the city settling into its last ordinary night. Then they went inside, to face their fathers, to change the plan, to do what needed to be done before dawn. Behind them, Vesuvius rumbled—a low, grinding sound that traveled through the earth and up through the stones of the villa. The lamps flickered. The water in the fountain trembled. And somewhere in the darkness, a dog began to howl.
