…The night was quiet. The fountain murmured. A breeze stirred the leaves. "What do we do now?" Issa asked. "We wait." They sat on the bench, their shoulders touching. The stars came out, one by one. Issa closed her eyes. She did not sleep, but she let the night hold her. At dawn, a knock came at the gate. Issa opened her eyes. The sky was grey, the first light spreading over the rooftops. A messenger stood at the gate. His face was grim. "The commission has reached a decision," he said. "You are to appear before them immediately." Issa's heart hammered. She looked at Leandros. He took her hand. "Together," he said. "Together." They walked to the Senate.
