…Issa looked at the scroll in Leandros’s hands. The black seal seemed to stare back at her, demanding an answer. “We have one month,” she said. “One month to prepare, to gather every scrap of evidence, and to convince Rome that we are not criminals.” “One month,” Leandros repeated. He tucked the scroll into his belt. “Then we sail.” He took her hand again, and they stood together in the courtyard as the sun climbed higher, casting their shadows long across the stones. Behind them, the temple of Isis held its secrets. Ahead of them, the sea waited. And somewhere in Rome, the Senate was already reading the first of Thalia’s letters, learning the truth that had come too late for Pompeii.
