…Sammy watched him go, a tiny, triumphant figure against the setting sun. She was sticky, her wings were a mess, and she was utterly exhausted, but she had won. Bartholomew was gone. Her meadow was safe. And she, Sammy the fairy, had proven that even the smallest creature could defeat the largest beast, with a little bit of wit, a lot of determination, and a well-placed elderberry. She dusted off her wings, a faint, satisfied hum escaping her lips. The thrill of the chase, she admitted to herself, had been rather exhilarating.
