…“Shepherd? Is that you in there? Because if it is, you really need to tell me when you’re planning on breaking the space-time continuum. I’m starting to think I’m going to miss all the good stuff if you keep this up!” Shepherd blinked, a slow, disbelieving smile spreading across his face. Of course. Who else would it be? He leaned back in his seat, the weight of his solitary journey suddenly feeling a little less heavy. The vast unknown still beckoned, but he wouldn't be facing it alone. The universe, it seemed, had a sense of humor. And so did Anneliese Cunningham.

Shepherd rose from the pilot’s seat, heart pounding with anticipation and something softer—relief, amusement—curling in his chest. The Chrono-Nautilus was bathed in a blue-green glow that shifted with the engine’s idling pulse. He followed the sound of Anneliese’s voice down a narrow passage, past instrument panels blinking like patient eyes. The air vibrated with suppressed energy, the promise of imminent departure fizzing just under the skin of reality.

He found her crouched beside the backup navigation array, her head tilted at a playful angle, curls askew. Anneliese glanced up, grinning at him from behind sliding spectacles. "So," she said, spreading her arms in mock surrender, "is this where you vaporize stowaways, or do I get a tour first?"

Shepherd’s laugh echoed through the vessel, sharp and bright after so much solitude. "Depends," he replied, hands on his hips. "Are you here to sabotage my mission, or to make sure I don’t end up on the wrong end of a black hole?"

She rose, brushing imaginary dust from her trousers, eyes sparkling. "Maybe both. If you’re lucky."

The two stood close in the narrow corridor, the hum of the Chrono-Nautilus resonating beneath their feet. For a moment, the world shrank to the space between them—the familiar cadence of her banter, the warmth in her gaze, the mingled scent of ozone and her vanilla perfume.

Shepherd hesitated, not because he was unsure, but because this was the threshold. The moment between preparation and leap. "You realize what you’re stepping into?" he asked, voice quieter now. "This isn’t an ordinary joyride. First contact, paradoxes, places where time loops in on itself like a Möbius strip… We might not—"

"Come back," she finished, gently, her voice threading into his hesitation. "I know. And I trust you, Shepherd. If anyone can keep the universe from swallowing us whole, it’s you."

Emotion flickered behind his eyes—a profound gratitude sharpened with something more tender. He allowed himself a smile that was just for her. "If you’re coming with me, Cunningham, I expect you to keep up."

Anneliese rolled her eyes, her grin returning, but softer now. "Just try not to lose the plot, Knox. And no existential crises before breakfast."

He turned, leading her back toward the cockpit. Every footstep felt heavier, momentous, carved into the history of his life. The control console came alive at his approach, recognizing his neural signature. The main viewscreen unfurled before them, the expanse of the night sky rendered in perfect clarity, ancient and electric.

"Ready?" Shepherd asked, but the question was a formality. Anneliese gripped the back of the spare seat, steadying herself. She nodded, her lips pressed into a line of determination and excitement.

As Shepherd reached toward the activation sequence, an unexpected alarm blared—a shrill, urgent cascade of warning tones. The viewscreen flickered, then shimmered, revealing not empty starlight, but a swirling distortion—like a whirlpool in space itself—spinning directly in their intended trajectory.

The Chrono-Nautilus rocked violently. Red warning glyphs spilled across the console. Anneliese steadied herself against his arm, breath caught. Their maiden launch, already hijacked by a cosmic anomaly.

Shepherd’s mind raced. Their options narrowed with each passing heartbeat. The vortex outside pulsed, expanding, hungry.

He glanced at Anneliese, her face pale but her eyes fierce. Every instinct screamed for action, but which move would keep them from being torn apart—or from missing a chance at the unknown?

The universe waited, breathlessly poised on the edge of the impossible.
